The words you use as a leader have a lot of power. They criticize, encourage, hurt, demoralize, challenge, support, demean, forgive and much more. How you choose to use the words is a difference maker.
Author, Pastor and Speaker Bill Hybels says great leaders know words matter. He states leaders should practice patience and humility before deciding what words to use. Sometimes, a great leader doesn’t have to say anything, you just know. Great leaders have the ability to inspire others with their words, especially when casting a vision.
Hybels states great leaders realize that language counts.
“The very best leaders I know wrestle with words until they are able to communicate their big ideas in a way that captures the imagination, catalyzes action, and lifts spirits. They know language matters,” author Bill Hybels from his best-selling book Axiom.
Words Create an Inspirational Message
- Don’t ever let anybody tell you you can’t do something.
- Protect your dream.
- When people can’t do something themselves, they think they can tell you you can’t do it.
- You want something, go get it!
What Words Can Do
The words you use can lift the people you lead up or tear them down. You can be a hammer all day and pretend everyone’s a nail. Or, you can ….
- Build trust
- Create vision
- Show empathy
- Provide brutal honesty
- Lift spirits
- Instigate action
- Solidify meaning
- Express sympathy
- Exemplify kindness
- Rally an organization, team or department
It’ your decision but choose your words wisely. The words and language you use make a difference!
Learn to build people up with your words, don’t tear them down or apart. Create a positive message and vision your team can rally behind. Choosing the right words takes time. But, the results will be well worth the time and effort.
Spend some time this weekend thinking about your words. They matter! Then again, some things may be better left unsaid? As Hybels says, you just know.
Have a great Labor Day Weekend!
